How to Request Samples

Ever see those ads on Facebook, or the internet, with a happy mom with piles and piles of really sweet coupons, samples or even full size product, and think, dang I wish I could do that.

Newsflash. YOU CAN! Read on to find out how!  It takes a bit of time, and dedication, but companies love to hear from consumers, and are usually pretty easy to contact.

Now, there are a few ways to reach out to companies. We will start with the most obvious one - you get a product, and it's defective. Doesn't work. Something is wrong, or you just plain didn't like it. In those cases, its generally pretty simple to reach out to a company.  Go to their website, or call the 800 number on the product, and explain your issue.  Be honest, and succinct, and offer any suggestion to have to remedy the issue.  Here is an example.

Another option is a company you like. A lot. These are often easiest because you have more material to work with.

Make you note that you enjoy their product, and why. Give examples of a specific time you used their product, or your plans for using their product. Thank them for making their product, and note a positive - its great you are so environmentally friendly, organic, local, etc. As always, be honest and truthful.

In closing, some people as for coupons, some don't. My recommendation would be, if you are asking for something free, be nice about it. Something like, Is there any chance you have some coupons or samples you could send me to enjoy/try out/get started on a line you host? If not, what about a mailing list I could join to see when your specials are?

The last type of letter we will discuss here is the, I've never tried this company, and would really like to, letter. This one is simple and easy, and just expresses your interest. This is the only letter in which I would openly ask for coupons or samples, so as to try out a new product.

A few things to remember in letter writing:

1. Always be honest and truthful. Don't make up an issue just to get free things.
2. If you have a complaint, make sure you also have lot codes, or UPC numbers, as companies will ask for these to help track down the problem.
3. Talk specifically about the product you are interested in/like/dislike.
4. Always *ALWAYS* always include your full name. mailing address, email, and contact number IN the body of the letter - the forms that you fill out online don't always have that information, and it is necessary to facilitate coupons, or correspondence with the company.
5. DO NOT COPY THESE LETTERS WORD FOR WORD. That's plagiarism, and it is not ok.

Enjoy, and good luck! Please comment here about any experiences you have had or any questions you have!
